Having seen Demetri Martin’s humorous take on social networking, it’s time to turn the lens inward. Consider one of your own online profiles (Facebook, MySpace, LastFM, LinkedIn, Netflix, etc.) and discuss the thoughts that went into creating it and the types of things you have to do to “maintain” it. What purpose does your profile serve? How is it a reflection of your actual self? How does it compare to other people’s profiles?
If you maintain no such online presence, use this podcast to discuss your reasons for opting out. You may also consider what types of things you’d be inclined to include were you to create a public online profile. If you have children, you may choose to discuss how you regulate or plan to regulate your child’s usage of social networks.
For those students unfamiliar with “Social Networking” as a concept, The New York Times archive has several hundred articles that you may consider.
